18 days of Freedom Travels was amazing, but also exhausting and we are just now catching up on posting about all the twists and turns (literally) of our trip.
So, I'll start off by stating something that is obvious, but I came to realize more with this trip, is that traveling on a motorcycle can be quite different from traveling in a car (especially two people on one motorcycle). One of the main differences is space available for stuff and because we were camping, much of that space was camping gear. Also, there are more frequent stops to fill up gas and stops for the passenger (me) whenever my sciatic started acting up. With that said, we tried to limit our total consecutive riding hours to 4-5 hours maximum in a day. As you will see, that does not take into account traffic and tolls which significantly affected our travel time once we got into France.
First stop was Ulm, Germany. This was a small town picked as a midpoint to Liechtenstein and wasn’t much to see there. Also, we left kind of later in the day and got into town late so barely had time for food and some rest. We did choose a hotel for this spot as to limit the amount of times we had to take down and set up the tent.
We headed out of Ulm about 10am, slow start for us as it was very hot that evening and made it difficult to sleep. By the way, although a little chilly, I think Europe is best visited in the fall or spring as most places do not have air conditioning!! >_<
We arrived at our campsite about 1pm and travel time is ideal as it took about 2-3 hours to get there. We stayed at the Camp Mittagsspitze campsite which sat on top of the hillside. As we came to realize throughout our travels, most of these campsites were more like RV parks so you are setting up your tent next to RVs, trailers and occasionally anther tent. We were supposed to have electricity but set up too far from the outlet and our extension cord would not reach. However, we learned our lesion and made sure to set up the extension cord prior to the tent at the next camp.
A little about Lichtenstein… Liechtenstein is a German speaking country between Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Vaduz is the capital and is known for its medieval castles and variety of landscapes from flat planes to the hills of the Alps. Vaduz is closer to the Swiss border and along the Rhine River. The ride through this area and the village to the campsite is beautiful.
The restaurant at the campsite did not have much for us to eat so we walked into town which was about 40 min. We had to do much of it in the rain, which is oddly peaceful once you accept that you’re going to get wet. There are lot of restaurants in town and places to eat. Most places in Europe do close in the afternoon for a few hours and reopen around 6 or 7 pm for dinner. So, this does make eating early difficult because service can be slow and dinner may take up to 2-3 hours depending on the food. We do not mind sitting for hours and relaxing, but this does take away from walking around and site-seeing, especially if this happens for a lunch break.
Either way, the city is charming and has some interesting cathedrals and castles. I most enjoyed the landscape and being surrounded by the Alps. The campsite worked out well and we would recommend for your travels if you're passing through Lichtenstein.
We only stayed there one night and were out by 9 am the next morning headed for Nice, France… we were hoping for a 6-hour ride…
